PalmSolo's Matt Miller has been busy putting his N90 through its paces. His most recent post really zeroes in on the camera and Bluetooth capabilities, but he also talks about applications that work rather well on the N90.
Matt's comments about easy, quality and being better than other phones out there also speaks to the heart of the personality of the N90.
We have to take the good with the bad, and in the effort of transparency we're posting this mixed critique of the blogger relations program.
I guess being polite to those that do nice things only warrants you being called a "drone." Oh well, we beleive in saying please and thank you ,so to the point about thanking someone, point taken. Next time we'll be more cheeky, as the Brits seem to like that, but we're working to appreciate those who are part of this effort and inform all of what's going on in the blogosphere about the effort.
The fancy prose and more witty humor can come later.
It seems the online marketing communications bloggers and media types around the globe have seen what we're up to here on the Nokia Nseries N90 blog and what the essence of our Blogger Relations Communications Program is all about.
Mike @ Connecting Tomorrow in his post about leaving Citizen Marketing to the Citizens priases us, even if I first thought he was being critical. Fortunately he was as good natured about my jet lagged dazed post and now it seems we're on the same page.
In an email that clarified things Mike wrote "I have replied to your post on the blog, but wanted to make sure you realised that I was PRAISING the N90 blog, and ranting about the DStv blog. If I understood you correctly and you are part of the development of the N90 blog - congrats - it is a fantastic idea and you guys are spot on."
This is not faint praise and is much appreciated.
We set this up to make it easy for bloggers to work with Nokia and to get information easily. As time goes on we are hopeful that even bloggers not yet in the program take advantage of the information and features on the Nseries blogs.
BlogBlogBlog has some observations, both pro and con on the N90.
In evaluating the two pay as you go options here in the USA for the trial I tried T-Mobile first, as my Blackberry also is with them, my hotspot account and I just think their PR support is better than Cingular', call that Media bias.
Anyway, I soon discovered, despite the claim of both the Roseville CA and Scottsdale AZ store's sales rep that Data did not work. So I tried Cingular and found out that indeed they do allow GPRS and EDGE data on the Pay As You Go SIMS.
That's why those bloggers who needed or requested a SIM here in the USA were provided Cingular Pay As You Go with actual credit on the SIMs.
The HowardForums, a blogger not in the Nokia Blogger Relations Program has an unsolicited opinion about the N90.
Reading through the blog it seems others are having problems with Cingular SIMS. I tried my N90 with both Pay as You Go SIMS from T-Mobile and Cingular and didn't have a problem so I wonder if age of SIMS has anything to do with it for Cingular customers.
We've asked Nokia support to investigate based on the this report and others.
Gotcha....Found taking a test shot and posted to Flickr by Ross Mayfield, Wiki master and one of the champions of Socialtext.
Ross, who is in the Blogger Relations Program, has also listed the N90 blog on his Ross Mayfield Weblog del.icio.us linkorama for which we say thanks for the traffic!
In a continuation of a review on PalmSolo says that the lack of a vibrate mode is a concern.
Hopefully the design engineers can take these comments into consideration when the next model based on the N90 style is developed.
The Gadget's Weblog has their initial review, revealing pros and cons about the blogger's personal experience and linking to some other blog posts from others in the Nokia Blogger Relations Program.
In the post the author comments about the lack of a virbrate mode. Pal Alec Saunders and I both wondered about that too and my questioning of the Nokia folks revealed two highly plausable answers:
1. There is so much inside the case now something had to go and the vibrator was it, that and the smaller power plug port.
2. Even more logical in my mind is the fact that the N90 is a video and still camera too. Imagine the vibrator going off when your recording that special moment. Hands shake enough, they don't need help.
Loic Le Meur, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Europe, Middle East and Africa for SixApart posted yesterday about how his newly arrived N90 landed him and of course the N90 some prime news coverage in as Loic described the top French computer publication.
The spillover benefit it seems is Loic will be vBlogging with his new N90 as will Rodrigo A. Sepulveda Schulz who scored our last N90, at an upcoming Bloggers conference Les Blogs II shortly.
Disclaimer--we purchased Moveable Type to be the blog software we opted to use for this blog over a few others simply because in my mind the team at Six Apart here in the USA, Mena, Anil, Andrew and especially the always helpful Jane Anderson are always there when you need them. Case in point Jane has offered free TypePad accounts to any Nokia Blogger Relations Blogger who wants to fully experience the Lifeblog software on the N90. Like the rest of the team I know at SixApart her "what can we do to help" approach is what keeps me using their software even in the face of stiff competition from others.
For those who do speak and read French, here's the native tongue version.
Jonathan has a commute from his home in Westchester County and he's showing us via his N90 what some of it is like.
Gotta call him brave though. Wearing white pants on a commuter train in New York City in November :-)
So share his commute vicariously as I just did.
Thanks Jonathan.
Blogger Relations Program participant Jonathan Greene weighs in with a video podcast shot on his way home from the office. He captured some of the holiday light show that is happening at Grand Central Station in New York City.
Now only if he would get some of those wonderful musicians down for us or maybe someone in Paris will. I tend to love hearing some of those very talented performers, especially the jazz, R&B and Gospel based types. Those types of expressive moments are perfect for the N90.
Jonathan consider that a nudge.
I noticed a French language web site had made some comments. Having been in France just last week for a client meeting I couldn't help see a few words that stood out. (Side note: my command of the French language is limited to wine, food, restuarant, travel and basic survival skills) Thankfully, there's Google to roughly translate this posting.
Merci mon blog ami! C'est correct.
Google's translation:
Nokia launches out in the blogs. Indeed, a first blog dedicated to the Nseries range and more particularly to N90 has just been born. This new blog is intended to accompany launching by N90 in the United States. If I included/understood operation well, this blog will be in fact a kind of hub gathering the posts existing bloggueurs who speak about the Nokia products. It is thus about a means economic to publish contents without having to do it oneself. I am curious to see how that will evolve/move.
I also found one in Spanish, but the Google translator really hacks it up. Even with two years of Spanish in high school I know it's not right. Anyone out there want to take a crack at a proper translation? If so, please post it in the comments section below.
Just before retiring for the night I found one in Italian. Appropos for Comunicano, my agency name means "to communicate" in Italian. Anyway, a rough translation on Google wouldn't do the author justice. I've inquired with a dear friend who lives mostly in Rome when she's not in the USA to translate properly. If anyone else can do it, please comment...
Steve over at SmallBrain Solutions has taken some time to correctly analyze what we're setting out to do here with the Nseries blogs. Yes there will be one each for other Nseries phones for reasons of focus. He also has kind word from GearBits.com's Craig in the comments and in turn I replied providing additional rationale about why this program is all about bloggers.
Take a read if you're so inclined to want to learn more.
Calling the N90 "awesome" would make anyone's day associated with the Nseries blogger relations program Hearing it from Corante's President/COO and uber blogger Stowe Boyd, well, that's "Priceless."
Stowe is putting the N90 through its paces and should have a report posted in the next few days he said in his video blog post.
We all await his pearls of insight.
A commentary site about Social Networking and the Media Movement called Going Social comments about the N90 Site.
One comment though, we're posting all the reviews we are aware of from bloggers in the program, good and bad.
So the bloggers all 48 of you or so who have the N90's don't have to be shy :-) and can air their views like Craig at GearBits did below.
If you want to see some comparison photos and get an handle on what works and what doesn't check out the continuation of Craig's post on GearBits.com today.
FYI--I'm blogging this from 37,000 feet on Fly.Net via Lufthansa.
It's nice that after only a few days of life this unique outreach effort by Nokia is being recognized. Based on the traffic the servers are seeing it's incredible to say the least.
Steve Rubel, one of the top PR bloggers made his comments known, then ClickZ one of the most read commentary sites on Interactive Marketing picked up the scent recognizing Interactive Marketing Whiz Jonathan Greene's postings. This all followed Loic and Om's nice praise.
Smallbrain Solutions, also weighs in with nice comments and actually quotes from the N90 blog.
Most recently Jeremy Pepper, who played a key role in convincing the Skype PR folks to work with the blogosphere almost made me blush with his effusive praise. and recognition
Today, only five days into life or so the N90 Blog got picked up and recognized by a few important sites.
Om Malik of Business 2.0 on his personal blog, GigaOm, linked to us.
We all patiently await Om's review as his photo clearly shows he has his N90 now :-)
PalmSolo, an offshoot of Geek.com has a preliminary review of the N90. Like many of the bloggers in the program he's just getting it out of the box but already making comments.
Like him, I too have a 7610 but actually left it home on a trip to Europe last week and have been using the N90 quite a bit as phone first, camera second but impressed with it's wide range of features also. The feel is actually something I like. While some call it heavy, I never wonder if it's tucked in my pants or jacket pocket. I also like the fact that the keypad is inside, so no errant calls.
Craig over at Gearbits has a warm up post already up on his blog.
He also posed a question in the support blog, which I hope I answered correctly.
Later in the week we'll start having Nokia Product folks lending a hand here as well. We want to let all the bloggers in the program get to experience the N90 and possibly help one another out.
Om Malik had his exhaustive collection of mobile phones photographed.
Notice the N90s in the pics.
Loic makes some statements (in French) and reveals some audio and video podcasts he's recorded, including a video he recorded on his N90.
Jonathan Greene, an Interactive Ad exec, self confessed usability freak when it comes to gadgets, has begun putting his N90 through its paces.
Check out his experiences.
Reviews are starting to pop up all over the place on the N90. A quick read with some pros and cons can be found in Laptop Magazine's review.
I recently came across a web site that has some of the N90 TV commericals.
They're worth checking out over on Symplification.
There are a series of these short form 30 second reality bites type of spots.
* Bar
* Gallery
* Resturant
* Waterski
* Wedding
I really love the bar and restaurant ones and considering they were shot with the N90 I have to say they are clearly webcast, if not broadcast quality!
Atmaspheric Endeavors has posted an early, well thought out and positve review about the N90. They also cite one of the recurring issues, the lack of Apple to make their iSync tools more friendly.
I experienced the same thing with my Pocket PC phones in the past and have yet, even after trying two different Sync programs. One would think that someone would figure there is a huge market for Syncing with Macs and really get it right, simply and elegantly.
I'm hoping that the N90 Bloggers support team comes up with some work arounds. It's been reported to me that there are some Nokia folks who also use the Mac so we're waiting to get some "unofficial, non-supported" solutions very soon.
Alec Saunders took the N90 out for a test drive recently. Here's his review.
Part of the Nokia Nseries Multimedia Range, Nokia N90 Combines the Best of Photography, Video and Communications
NEW YORK, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Nokia today announced sales start of the Nokia N90 in the U.S. The first mobile device to feature Carl Zeiss optics and a range of advanced camera functions in addition to superb quality video, the Nokia N90 is set to transform the mobile photography market.
The industry-acclaimed Nokia N90 will be available in November at select Ritz Camera stores and online at ritzcamera.com for an estimated retail price of $399 with activation. The Nokia N90 will also be available in December at CompUSA retail locations, and through the Neiman Marcus holiday catalog.
"Response to the N90 has been overwhelming," said David Watkins, Director, Imaging Business for Nokia North America. "Photographers, filmmakers and people around the globe have created remarkable results with the device, while enjoying all the benefits of staying connected to work and to life."
The Nokia N90 was named American Photo's Editor's Choice for "Breakthrough" product this year and recently received a "Best of What's New" 2005 award from Popular Science magazine. The European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), the largest editorial multimedia organization in Europe,
voted the N90 "European Media Phone of the Year 2005-6".
In October, Nokia and five of the world's best photographers announced the 'See New' competition -- the most ambitious mobile photography competition ever undertaken. To inspire people to enter, a stellar line-up of professional photographers have themselves been shooting using the Nokia N90,
producing more than 60 brand new images. These images and competition details can be viewed at http://www.seenew.com . The deadline for entries is February 28th, 2006.
The Nokia N90 is packed with advanced digital camera features to capture print quality photos, including a two megapixel camera with autofocus, integrated LED flash, macro mode for sharp close-ups and on-device photo editing capabilities. The Nokia N90 also features VHS resolution video recording in MP4 format and comes with dedicated record and zoom keys for easy video capture.
The Nokia XpressPrint solution provides Nokia N90 users with a variety of printing options. When printing via PictBridge, for example, the handset is connected directly to a compatible printer with a USB cable. The Nokia XpressPrint solution allows for wireless printing over Bluetooth wireless technology, and furthermore, the MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC) can be extracted from the side of the phone and inserted into a compatible printer.
Photos and video clips taken with the Nokia N90 can conveniently be stored on the PC using the Nokia PC Suite Image Store, which, when connected, automatically saves images and video clips to the PC.
